Bergen in a Few Hours: Attractions and Souvenirs for Cruise Passengers

You have a few hours in Bergen before the ship sets sail again. That’s plenty of time to really explore the city, as long as you know where to go.

The cruise terminal is located right next to Bryggen, and most of the sights you’ll want to see are within a leisurely stroll. Below is a simple route through the city center that offers history, views, and local flavors, and takes you past WayNor at Bryggen if you’d like to bring a souvenir home.

A walk along Bryggen

Start your day with a stroll through the narrow wooden buildings of Bryggen. This is Bergen’s oldest district and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you venture behind the famous facades, you’ll discover alleys, old warehouses, and small artisan shops, offering a glimpse into the city’s history from the Hanseatic era.

Come early—you’ll find the best photo opportunities here before the crowds arrive.

A stop at WayNor Bryggen

Just a few minutes’ walk from the pier, WayNor Bryggen is the perfect first stop when you’re in the area. Here you’ll find Norwegian souvenirs and gifts all in one place in a large store spanning 700 m², so you don’t have to spend time searching through multiple shops.

If you’re traveling on a cruise, it’s important that your souvenirs are easy to pack. We offer a wide selection of lightweight and practical mementos from Bergen, ranging from the Aquarelle Bergen series—featuring watercolor motifs of Bryggen and the Fløibanen funicular—to the Bergen Black & White series and small prints that take up minimal space in your suitcase. Magnets, keychains, and 3D postcards from Bergen are among the items our cruise guests most often take home, and they make lovely little gifts for those waiting at home.

In case the weather in Bergen takes a turn for the worse, you’ll also find practical items such as umbrellas, as well as a selection of rain gear

The Fløibanen funicular and the view of the city

The Fløibanen funicular is a five-minute walk from Bryggen. The ride up takes less than ten minutes, and from the top you can see the entire city center, the fjord, and your ship docked at the pier. It’s one of the quickest ways to get a bird’s-eye view of the city when you’re short on time.

On busy days, there may be lines, so it’s a good idea to arrive early. If you go early in the day, you’ll also avoid the largest groups.

Lunch at Trekroneren

When you come back down, it’s time for a quick bite of local fare. Trekroneren is a Bergen institution known for its sausages. Reindeer sausage with lingonberries and fried onions gives you a taste of Norwegian food culture without having to sit down at a restaurant.

It only takes a few minutes, and you'll be back on your feet and ready for the next stop.

Bergenhus Fortress on the way back

On your way back to the ship, you can stop by Bergenhus Fortress. Here, Håkonshallen and Rosenkrantz Tower stand surrounded by open lawns, and you can feel the history in the walls. The area is peaceful and green, and it’s so close to the harbor that it’s the perfect final stop before you head back on board.

Experience Bergen in a short time‍

Starting from Bryggen, you can enjoy the history, the views, and a taste of local flavors without having to stray far from the ship. It’s a city that quickly reveals itself once you know where to go.

If you’re looking for a souvenir from Bergen, you’ll find WayNor Bryggen right by the cruise ship terminal. Simple, accessible, and perfect for travelers passing through.
